BELVEDERE, Marin County — October 31, 2026. Belvedere is exploring whether temporary water-filled barriers could protect vulnerable sections of road along the lagoon during winter high tides and storms. The idea is still in design review, not an installed flood-protection system.
What is under consideration?
During an October 12 presentation, Public Works Director Antony Boyd described work with Stetson Engineers on a temporary barrier concept for two lagoon-edge roads carrying important city utilities. The proposal is intended to supplement longer-term infrastructure resilience work while the community prepares for possible severe coastal weather.
Local reporting by The Ark described a preliminary design and a possible return to the City Council for discussion on November 9. That date is a prospective meeting milestone, not evidence that the council has authorized construction or chosen a specific product.
What the plan does not establish
Residents should not assume barriers are already available, that they would protect every lagoon home or that a temporary installation could withstand all flooding scenarios. Its feasibility, engineering details, budget and deployment procedures remain questions for staff and the council. A winter outlook is not a prediction that any particular street will flood on a specific date.
How residents can prepare independently
Review flood insurance and evacuation information, register for AlertMarin, and use official city notices for road conditions. Never drive through standing water or rely on an unapproved barrier concept for household flood planning.
