BELVEDERE, Marin County — October 31, 2026. Belvedere’s leaders are considering a study of their Police Department’s future, including whether a shared-services arrangement with neighboring Tiburon could address persistent staffing and coverage pressures. No police merger has been approved.
What prompted the discussion?
The small city has faced difficulty filling its authorized patrol roster and covering absences. In an October 12 City Council discussion, officials described a potential independent review with two components: first, staffing, equipment and service requirements for Belvedere’s existing department; second, the costs and implications of alternative service arrangements with nearby jurisdictions.
Hoodline reported on October 21 that four duty officers were available amid a longer-running staffing shortfall. Earlier reporting by The Ark documented budgeted hiring and compensation adjustments. A budgeted position, however, is not necessarily a filled position.
What questions should residents ask?
The eventual study should distinguish response times, patrol coverage, accountability, staffing costs and the ability to retain local priorities under each alternative. Shared service could bring efficiencies but would also require a clear contract and decision on who sets operational priorities. Maintaining an independent department could have different financial and recruitment consequences.
This is a policy review, not a report of altered emergency calling procedures. Residents should continue to use 911 for emergencies and consult the city’s official Police Department information for nonemergency matters.
